During the 1800s, European countries like Britain and France tried to expand their power in the world. They sought to build empires by creating colonies in Africa and Asia, replacing or ruling over existing political structures in these regions.
Read the quotation to see how a British empire builder justified imperialism in Africa.
According to Lord Frederick Lugard, why do the British have a right to Africa?
To what “ever-growing population” does Lugard refer?
What is Lugard’s attitude toward the “natives”?
"There are some who say we have no right to Africa at all, that it 'belongs to the natives.' I hold that our right is the necessity that is upon us to provide for our ever-growing population—either by opening new fields for emigration, or by providing work and employment . . . and to stimulate trade by finding new markets."
—Lord Frederick Lugard

Identify ways that responsible community members exercise their rights, responsibilities, and roles
Distinguish civic virtue, common courtesy, respect for person/property, civic and personal responsibility, and honesty as important characteristics for citizens to effectively participate in public life

The anvils represent different responsibilities: Community Service (“C”), Getting an Education (“E”), Staying Informed (“I”), Jury Duty (“J”), Military Service (“M”), Following the Law (“L”), Respecting Others (“R”), Speaking Your Mind (“S”), Paying Taxes (“T”), and Voting (“V”).
If you selected the most appropriate civic responsibility, the anvil will lift the citizen, and he or she will give a positive response in a green box. If an incorrect civic responsibility has been launched, the anvil will hit the citizen, and he or she will give a confused response in a red box. You will be able to move on to the second level once the correct responsibility has been launched at the problem. A score sheet will appear at the end of each level. There are five levels.
After playing the game, respond to the following prompts on the attached Google Doc (5 COMPLETE sentences minimum per prompt) (WRITE YOUR ANSWERS IN RED) :
